Project background (context)
Food and feasting is important at every event and milestone in life. Preparing food and the act of sitting and eating together can help to heal, resolve, share and shape experience. It can nourish us emotionally as well as physically, it can be symbolic, evoke memory, draw on historical, cultural and traditional sources, to help us find meaning and come to terms with life and death events.
Brief
Define a ‘loss’ and consider how to celebrate or lament its passing, in the context of food and funeral feasting.
This was an editorial task, to create content for a cookbook/magazine/publication.
Outcome
In Memory of Childhood Imagination: A celebration of the enchanted worlds we knew as children, but have forgotten as adults
As we grow up, we lose our sense of wonder. There are fewer new things to try and more rules to follow. Our interest in food and creativity lessens. Food becomes fuel and expected etiquette dulls the once-exciting experience of eating. Certain food groups shouldn’t be mixed. Savoury before sweet. Use your cutlery, not your hands…
We forget how to play, enjoy, and imagine.
Readers are invited to create their own ‘enchanted world’ from a diverse list of ingredients, awakening their supposedly ‘lost’ imaginations.
