Who Are You and What Are You (Really) Selling? Influence and Identity on Instagram
My dissertation examines the relationship between influencers and their audiences on the social networking site Instagram, in order to ascertain how the platform affects users’ self-worth, sense of community and ability to inspire or bring about social and political change.
Create an A4 publication that reflects the subject of your dissertation. The design should demonstrate your skills as a designer in typography, typesetting and clarity of communication.
Instagram has a distinctly clean aesthetic, with a “focus on simplicity and inspiring creativity through […] thoughtful product design”.
A publication inspired by Instagram’s aesthetic – simplicity, clarity and sans-serif type…
Sans-serif type // Focus on simplicity and clarity of information // Justified body text, reflecting the single column of images that users scroll through on Instagram // Ragged pull-quotes, headings, figure titles and captions, reflecting the style of comments and captions on Instagram // Accent colours and gradients inspired by Instagram’s visual identity // Printed on newsprint, reflecting the informative nature of Instagram (my dissertation finds that the platform is increasingly a news source; a space where young people share, discuss and respond to current affairs) // ‘Scrollbar’ in margin to reflect both the action of scrolling and CMYK marks in newspapers
